Adult mice expressing a constitutive active version of the hemopoietic Src-kinase Hck have a highly sensitized lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced innate immune response and spontaneously acquire a lung pathology characterized by extensive eosinophilic and mononuclear cell infiltrations. Based on the functional association of Hck with leukocyte integrins, such findings suggest that constitutive activation of Hck may mimic adhesion-dependent priming of leukocytes, thereby skewing innate immunity from a reversible physiological host defense response to one causing irreversible (lung) tissue damage.
