Bronchial epithelial cells of the adult human lung express the major histocompatibility complex class I-related Fc receptor, FcRn. FcRn acts as a transepithelial trafficking receptor for IgG that mediates absorption of the intact immunoglobulin from lumenal secretions. Such receptor-mediated transport explains a mechanism by which IgG may act in immune surveillance to retrieve lumenal antigens from mucosal surfaces for processing in the lamina propria or systemically.
