Natural killer (NK) cells expressing NK receptors Ly49C, I, and H were depleted in vivo from murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV)-infected C57BL/6 mice with monoclonal antibody (mAb) 1F8. This resulted in increased viral titers and pathology during an acute MCMV infection (day 4). Hematoxylin and eosin staining of mAb 1F8-treated C57BL/6 mouse livers (bottom panel) shows the presence of large necrotic areas, in contrast to discrete loci of inflammation as seen in MCMV-infected livers from mice not depleted of NK cells (top panel).
